RE: Looking at 5ers

Do not.....I repeat DO NOT believe the salesman when he tells you your truck can pull anything. Do your home work and add up the weights yourself. He wants to make a sale and will tell you anything. :E

RE: Buying Consigned RV

You might want to check out the slides and make sure they go out and back in straight and not more at the top than the bottom or visa versa. Check the rubber seals around the slides, CHECK THE TIRES! Make sure they are NOT Tow Max or Duro's. Check around the windows for leaks, ceiling and etc. Make sure black, fresh water and gray tanks do not leak. Good idea to have it hooked up to water for overnight. Cameo's are a good brand and usually don't have a lot of serious problems. This is something anyone should look at when buying any trailer.

RE: Can You Tow A Fifth Wheel With A Ford F150 w/ 5.5 ft bed?

Folks, my post has NOTHING at all to do with the posted tow rating of a F150 or a F250. To be honest I never even looked at them. I based my opinion of what my F150 could tow on my personal experience with MY F150. I also based my opinion on my F250 on MY personal experience with MY F250. I am not about to tell YOU what YOU should do I have only given you MY observation on two of my personal vehicles. You may take it or leave it. I will be happy to hear what YOUR personal experience is on YOUR F150 and YOUR F250. In fact that is just what I did to HELP ( not to make my decision for me ) guide me to the right vehicle. The tow rating of vehicles may well be like the salesman's recomendation of what your vehicle can tow depending on his making a sale. I weigh the information that I can get and make MY decision and I suggest that you do the same. If what I have told you is of some help, that's well and good but it is your money and your life and your decision. I hope that you are as happy with your decision as I am with mine. Ok here is our experience. We had a prefectly good 3/4 ton diesel. When we bought this 5th wheel. We used this truck to bring it home and had added 5,000 pound helper springs in order to do it. We knew we were over weight. As soon as we got this 5th wheel home, we traded this truck for the one we have now! The previous diesel would pull it but took more yards to stop it. USING TRAILER BRAKES!. With that much weight behind, pushing the truck it takes a lot to stop it. Now our truck works well with this heavy 5th wheel.

RE: recomended fifth wheel brands

Also remember that the trailer brakes stop the trailer...not the truck brakes. Trailer brakes do stop the trailer but if you have more weight than your tow vehicle can handle....that could have an effect on stopping and also going up hills. Heavier truck can also have an effect on towing when you are in windy conditions, or in case of a blow out or stopping quickly. You will have more control on your trailer if you have a heavier tow vehicle. Be safe. :)

RE: Anyone Use a Blue Ox Bed Saver/Pin Lock?

One more thing..... The bed saver fit a 15 K hitch. We upgraded to a 22 K hitch. After searching for 2 months for a bed saver to fit this hitch. I don't think they make one. We took our bed saver to a metal fabricator and he made it fit our 22 K hitch. It was after this that it saved our truck bed! This new 22 K hitch was new to us and I didn't have the handle down in the position and it went "bang" but the bed saver caught the king pin! So if you have a bigger hitch, it is still possible to have a bed saver to fit that hitch. This guy did an excellent job on the bed saver.

RE: EEEEWwwwww ... bed bugs!

And they all had bed bugs. They wore the same clothes day after day until they pretty much fell off. They all had lice and scabies. And diarrhea from drinking bad water and eating spoiled food, when they had food. And they walked across the prairie, often in bare feet--had to save the oxen's strength for the Rockies. They suffered smallpox, measles, infant death, and cholera with no medications other than whatever herbs Mom had packed. Not even an aspirin for their backaches. No sir, I am not made of pioneer stock. Not all of them were dirty and wore the same clothing till they fell off! Have you heard of lye bar soap? They made their soap and brought it along. Not all had lice and bed bugs! People came accross the plains but they still kept reasonable clean, as long as they could find water to bathe. They had ways to treat lice and bed bugs back then too!

RE: Bad drivers both WITH and WITHOUT an RV

This is part of the result of not having drivers education in our schools! Also cell phones should not be used while driving. I don't care who you are....you can not give driving your undivided attention when on a cell phone!

RE: Pulling Heavy 5W Without Duallys

You are right NC Hauler. Good advice! We had to trade in a perfectly good diesel truck on the truck we now have when we bought our present 5er. Have not looked back. The dually is harder to park when shopping and etc, but does such a great job towing down the road. And is a whole lot safer.

RE: Anyone Use a Blue Ox Bed Saver/Pin Lock?

Was just on the USA Trailer Hitch web site and there was one testimonial of a guy who said his fifth wheel with a pin weight of 2k crushed his Bed Saver. Anyone have this experience? My 3400RL Montana has that kind of pin weight. Maybe he had it installed incorrectly. Our pin weight is 3.1 K and the bedsaver saved our pickup bed last year. Did not do any damage to the bedsaver. Or the pickup bed.

RE: Anyone Use a Blue Ox Bed Saver/Pin Lock?

We didn't get ours from Blue OX but have one for several years. It has saved us a couple of times! Worth the money.

RE: recomended fifth wheel brands

We were shopping for furniture yesterday. Unfortunately the furniture dealer and the RV dealer are connected. All the 5ers were sitting with the doors open so who could resist a quick look. The first one we looked at was a 28' Springdale. It has the perfect floor plan to suite us plus all the bells and whistle that we would like to have. The salesman offered us a really good trade in and the take-it home price was way below what I would have expected. The salesman insists that our 1/2 ton 5.3 Silverado would pull it easily. I don't know if Sprindale is available in the US but if they are you might want to take a look. They aren't a top of line RV but appear well made and great value for the money. We can't all afford deluxe RVs or trucks so we have to look for the best of deal possible. We really can't afford to change RVs right now but we are so tempted it still might happen. We certainly fell in love with that one. Don't ever believe what a salesman tells you about an RV or what can tow it! He wants to make a sale and would say anything. Your 150 truck may do it but it will be hard on the truck and you have some weight to stop. Could be dangerous. If I sound like the weight police then I am sorry. I just worry that someone with an overloaded truck could cause an accident and kill someone. Wouldn't want that to hit us either. Be safe and get a bigger truck for your family and other people. :)

RE: Unusual Things People Camp With

LOL I often wonder why some folks even GO camping since they bring so many decorations from home with them. Palm trees lighting up the campground, the flamingos, and assorted other "yard art" when NATURE trumps them every time (with no batteries required) Who is to say what is unusual. To some what they bring may not be unusual to them. We are full timers and do not go to wilderness sites. We go to membership RV parks and etc. Bring what we want to make our site home. Have solar butterfly lights that change color. No one has complained about those and they do not make a lot of light. People like them! We also have our two Schnauzers and a big tom cat that walks on a leash. :)

RE: "I BELIEVE"...................

believe the deisel hp/tourque wars of the big three are getting out of hand. we don't need 400+ hp in a pickup with a 25,000 cgvw. I believe we do have a big truck to pull our 5th wheel and it does great. :) I believe we like our full time life in our 5th wheel. I believe life is good! :) I believe it is cold here in AZ right now! :W :B I believe it will be 80 by this weekend! :)

RE: Full timing definition

Houseless is a good word for it. Perfect! :) We sold our house and moved into our 5th wheel and enjoy this life style. We can change the scenery.

RE: South Dakota Blue Cross Rejects Full-timers

Since this is a Full-Time RVing Forum. I bet that the many getting ready or thinking about Fulltime. Would like to have your list of 99 reasons why you picked Texas over SD. It would help them decide. Everyone will look forward to seeing the list posted. Thanks. I would post it but could risk being sued by the businesses in SD that make their living getting people to use SD for residence. We are very happy with Texas residency. Got plates, drivers license, registered to vote etc. Was very easy getting everything done. With proper paperwork can all be done in one day! Also no issues with insurance. We have other reasons why we chose Texas that I won't go into here on a public forum.

RE: 29' - 30' 5th wheel

What does your floor plan have to do with the OP asking about 29-30 floor plans? Chris Has a lot to do with different floor plans. If you don't like it, then don't read it. Dats one ugly trailer!!!! So you think our trailer is ugly. You don't have to look at it or live in it. We like it so I could care less if you think it looks ugly or what you think.

RE: RV "fireplaces"

We like our fire places and use them quite often. Ordered it with this 5er. Also DH put one in the bedroom. Use that often in mornings and evenings. It is different brand and is smaller. Can't remember the brand. The one in living room is dimplex. Wouldn't do without them. Our living room fireplace has it's own breaker. Bedroom will soon, since DH is retired electrician.
